Maiorchino

Maiorchino is a fine hard-paste pecorino cheese typical of the province of Messina, in Sicily, protected as a Slow Food Presidium. It is included in the list of Italian Traditional Agri-Food Products (PAT).

In the village of Novara di Sicilia, located between the Peloritani and Nebrodi mountains, the historic tournament of the "Throwing of the Maiorchino". The event, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, consists in throwing and rolling the whole cheese wheels along the streets of the historic center using a small rope (the lazada).
